In the book "High Tech Cycling" compiled by Human Kinetics, they describe the important benefits of reducing aerodynamic drag by making sure that a rider's legs are setup properly on crank cycles. Their wind tunnel tests show that the least drag forces happen when the crank is about 90o or 270o relative to the ground. This happens because the forward leg diverts air around the back leg from the oncoming wind. There, the back leg has less drag, and that means there is overall less drag force.
