Off-road vehicles are commonly used both for work and recreation purposes. The roof racks are not mere trivial accessories. They are necessary for carrying luggage, tools and sports-related equipment such as bicycles and kayaks. Most vehicles that are designed for off-road driving have built-in roof racks but there are also those that do not have built-in racks. Consequently, these vehicles need aftermarket roof racks to be installed on them. Even those that have built-in racks may require other types of specialized or customized racks for specific purposes.

There are five basic types of roof racks that can be installed on off-road vehicles. These are typically made from aluminum materials but some are also made from composite tough materials such as carbon fiber. They are designed not only to carry heavy loads but also to withstand abuse from the weather. These materials are resistant to corrosion and also resistant to fluctuating temperature.
