One popular option is bicycling. Bicycling is less stressful on the joints than running and more convenient than dashing off to the gym. Most people already have a bike so it's cheap to get into, and even if you don't have a bike, the investment is well worth it. Which do you think you're more likely to waste, a gym membership or a bike? At least you can loan out your bike or sell it if you don't want it.
So you've decided that you're going to get into biking as a way to improve your health. The first thing you need to do is get a bike. If you already have one that you feel is suitable, then feel free to skip this paragraph. For those of you looking to buy a new bike, your options can be narrowed down to a few basic choices.

In today's fitness market, there are any number of workout options. Many people choose to purchase a membership at a local gym or fitness club. Other people decide that running is the way they want to get healthier. Some people prefer swimming, walking, hiking, etc. There are plenty of options for people looking for exercise.
Unless you plan on buying a cheap bike from Walmart or your local sporting goods store, buying a new bike can be a tedious process. If you are looking for a higher end road or mountain bike for serious recreational use, there are several things to consider before making the purchase: price, quality, components, weight, and warranty. There are tons of online resources, including the manufactures websites, where this information can be found. Another good way to get a grasp of this information is to visit your local bike shop and talk with an expert.
When it comes down to it, you first need to create a budget and a price range. When it comes to bikes, you typically get what you pay for. However, there are certain instances when you will pay a little more for certain brands, such as Trek or Specialized. For example, let's say your budget is $2,000 and you are looking for a new road bike. You have been shopping around for weeks looking at every bike imaginable until you are blue in the face. Finally you find a Trek you really like and notice the quality level of components (aka: groupo set) it comes with. You recall a bike from a smaller company you were looking at last week equipped with top of the line components where the Trek in front of you has medium level. What throws you for a loop is they're the same price. This is common when it comes to bike companies. After all, Trek is a well established company and people know the name, thus willing to pay more. You may get better quality and a better warranty going with the name brand, but may not get the higher end components on a bike in your price range. But in the end, does it really doesn't matter? What I used to tell my customers is that whatever feels the best and is in your budget it is what you should get.
Last but not least, we have the premium bicycles, which are definitely the best ones you can find and only made for competitions. The carbon frames are frequently encountered with these models and so are the carbon components. You can see such bikes in the French Tour, but the prices can even reach the sum of eight thousand euros.
When it comes to components, the best manufacturers are Shimano and Sram, but there are a lot of other such manufacturers which bring their contribution to the high performances these bikes can have.
The bicycles in the mid towards high-end class have a lot of high quality components, mainly manufactured by Shimano. You can find SLX and XT pieces with these bicycles, but also X.7 and X.9 ones from the Sram line of components. The forks are usually made by RockShox, Recon and Reba, but you can also encounter Fox ones. The brakes are hydraulic and the models are very close to the top or even top ones. There area lot of full-suspension models, too, these bikes registering notable performances. If you want to buy such a bike, you should take about one thousand - one thousand five hundred euros out of your pocket and you should also keep in mind that they weigh about ten or eleven kilograms.
The high-end bikes are professional ones and they can be used in Cross Country competitions and on very tough circuits. You can also find Enduro or Downhill bikes in this category. All the components are highly performing and very refined, some models featuring a carbon frame. These bikes cost between one thousand five hundred euros and two thousand euros.
